Bio:

Francisco Ribalta (2 June 1565 – 14 January 1628), was a Spanish painter of the Baroque period, mostly of religious subjects.

Found this one the other day whilst looking for corpus reference. The limited palette so masterfully used to full effect.For more reading on Ribalta here is the link I can highly recommend studying his works.

Worked on this one last November but recently finished it this month, my girlfriend Hayley did the light setup she does photography so is used to getting lighting right, I wanted it dramatic and dark like a Ribera drawing, hope you like it.

BBC 2 Programme Why Beauty Matters.

I really enjoyed this programme which was on Saturday night. We take a journey with Philosopher Roger Scruton through the world of art. He takes a look at crap disposable ugly modern shite and juxtaposes it against images of beauty and discusses why it matters to the human spirit by using the works of Plato and Kant as a model. Really thought provoking stuff and a genuine argument against modern art I loved it.

Artistic Demons

Recently I have been working hard on my paintings and drawings for a personal exhibit next year. I've been by pouring myself into the work recently and feel fresh and inspired by doing so. I've made a few small leaps on the road to improvement and found my subject matter for my 2010 cgi reel. I made a conscious effort to challenge myself and found weakness in my execution, which is only ever a good thing. Once you are 100 % honest about your ability you can make a plan to overcome your demons. Its these steps you must take as an artist to improve otherwise the onset of artistic stagnation can creep in. Sometimes your
want to perform will outweigh your ability so you have to go back to basics and make your weakness your strengths by drawing all the time. Through repetition and Study you can improve its the only way. You have to be fearless and continue to place total trust in the methods of the past, they won't let you down. The improvements won't happen all the time but when they do it gives so so much energy to keep going and makes you happy:) Do your drawing now don't wait till tomorrow start now.:)

3D Total 'Making of Union Light and Power'.

I was asked a few months back to produce a small making of tutorial for 3D Total of Union Light and Power. A painting I did in Photoshop back in August. Its due to go up on their website on the 14 of December, check it out if you have time. I aimed for the tutorial to not be a 'how to use photoshop' tutorial but more the fundamentals behind painting and the creative journey, and how we can better use traditional skills and processes to help us in our work in the digital realm and my experience of using the two together.
